The latest issue of Exchange magazine reports on a study recently conducted with North America’s largest non-profit child care organizations. When asked about the events threatening non-profit organizations in 2010, they listed the following :

State of the economy
Rising cost of health insurance
Children with challenging behaviors
Decreases in public subsidies
Lack of affordable space to expand
Lack of subsidies for middle class parents
Shortage of qualified teachers
State quality rating systems
Changes to state licensing/regulations
Lack of work ethic of younger hires

“Study Finds That Effects of Low-Quality Child Care Last Into Adolescence”

“Good Child Care Has Benefits That Last Into High School-But Free Play Is Important”

These headlines are both reporting on the same study. The study was done by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development following 1,324 children from one month of age to almost 20. Although we rarely see studies that follow kids for 20 years to assess the effects of child care on their development, we have a great deal of data that says the same thing.

Good child care is good for children and bad child care is bad for children.

It would be nice if we could just all agree on this and spend the money going for research and data collection on underwriting the salaries and training of child care staff. That is how we increase the quality of child care for all kids.

I’ve been spending time with my not-quite-3 year old nephew lately. He lives in Florida so we don’t know each other very well. He starts off every conversation with “Can I go outside?” He has blond, wavy hair and a tiny little face. He does not slow down until he sleeps. He is very polite, even managing an “I’m sorry” in the middle of a melt down. Somehow he manages to be a speed demon and cuddly all at once. Watching him make up and sing a song would touch the heart of an ogre.
It dawned on me that this is what they need in the halls of government. They need little kids to show the folks in Frankfort and D.C. how to be polite, how to apologize when you are wrong, and how to finish a task without meltdowns.
Bring on the 2 year olds.

Does your nonprofit organization or school need new and gently used children’s books? The Louisville Half Pint Library Children’s Book Giveaway event is Tuesday, May 11th at our Westport Road location from 2-4pm.

How will the “Giveaway” event work?
All nonprofit organizations, educators, schools, churches, hospitals and clinics are welcome to attend. A donation form can be found here: http://www.halfpricebooks.com/hpl_get_involved.html
Agencies will arrive with their own transportation to pick up books. We suggest you get there early; we have a limited supply and will distribute the books on a first-come, first-served basis; each nonprofit representative will receive 2 boxes of books while supplies last. The books will be an assortment of kid’s books in manageable boxes ready to be loaded.

Crib Recalls

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has released two major crib recalls;

The first, 10-211, involves all Simplicity full-size cribs with tubular metal mattress support frames. The frames can fail, causing partial collapse of the crib. Although Simplicity is no longer in business, most retailers are cooperating by offering a refund, replacement, or store credit. Consumers should contact the place of purchase for a remedy.

The second, 10-212, involves about 200,000 wooden Graco branded drop side cribs made by LaJobi. Hardware failure can cause the drop sides to detach. Consumers should contact Lajobi by telephone or at their website.
