SUMMARY:Joys of Teaching Community of Practice: Promoting a Culture of Self-Care by Building Resilience\, Before\, During and After a Crisis!
DESCRIPTION:Joys of Teaching Community of Practice Session 4: Promoting a Culture of Self-Care by Building Resilience\, Before\, During and After a Crisis!\nTaking care of yourself is an important part of being a caregiver. It can be challenging to prioritize time for yourself when you have so many other things in your life to tend too and COVID-19 only magnified this existing challenge. If you are not feeling well\, healthy\, and nurtured\, your stress and fatigue can impact others including the children in your care and your colleagues. It can be easy to forget that adults influence the climate in their classrooms and contribute greatly to the school culture. With some intention and best practices\, even the most stressful situations can be managed by adults to ensure that the school environment is one of peace and safety where all can thrive. This session will introduce educators to the concept of healthy stress\, unhealthy stress and chronic stress. Not all stressful events lead to harmful outcomes including COVID-19. During our two hours together we will explore practices that reduce stress and build resilience. In addition we will discuss research on COVID-19 and how vulnerable populations experience adversity at higher rates due to COVID-19. Resilience is one way we can combat the impact COVID-19 continues to have on our children\, families and friends. Resilience is not a trait we are born with or without\, it is a skillset we can develop by focusing on the following six areas: self-awareness\, self-regulation\, mental agility\, strengths of character\, connection and optimism. Resilience is one small way we can buffer stress and create classroom climates that are rooted in social-emotional learning. This session will provide folks with lots of opportunity to chat about what works for them with regard to self-care and identify many ways in which they can cultivate their skills of resilience. \nThe Joys of Teaching Community of Practice will meet monthly on the fourth Thursday from 4:30-6:30 pm EST through June 2022. SUMMARY:Strengthening Families: Social and Emotional Competence of Children
DESCRIPTION:This training will help you understand how to support children in learning how to positively interact with others\, self-regulating their behaviors\, and effectively communicating their feelings – all of which have positive impacts on their relationships with family members\, other adults\, and peers. Challenging behaviors or delayed development can create extra stress for families\, so early identification and support for both parents and the child are critical to keep children on track. It’s never easy to start these conversations\, and it can be hard to find the right resources. Join 4-C to discover some talking points\, local resources\, and more! By the end of the session\, you will feel more confident in understanding social-emotional development\, and in your ability to refer families to needed resources as challenges arise. \nThis workshop is free thanks to the generous sponsorship by the Kosair Charities Face It Movement. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. SUMMARY:School Readiness Series - Playing with Language and Communication!
DESCRIPTION:Language and communication skills start developing before a child enters into this world and consist of more than merely words spoken. Language and communication can be described as all the different ways a child understands and communicates with the world. This two hour session will provide educators with the developmental framework necessary to nurture communication and language. Educators will be asked to explore children’s storybooks in advance of the session and will receive one hour of additional credit. After exploring and selecting a storybook\, the educators will be asked to reinterpret or express the book using gestures\, symbolic representation\, rhythms or more with their class and will share this experience with others. This rich experience will provide ideas\, strategies and knowledge on how to nurture a child’s love for language and communication. By the end of the session\, the participants will know how the domain of language and communication is related to other areas of development and what they can do as educators to create daily experiences that foster language and communication skills by using books and print in meaningful ways. \nThis workshop is free thanks to the generous sponsorship by the Jefferson County Community Early Childhood Council through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training.
