SUMMARY:Nature & Inquiry Community of Practice: Green Spaces in an Urban Setting
DESCRIPTION:Nature & Inquiry Community of Practice Session 2: Green Spaces in an Urban Setting\nDive deep into children’s rights to play and how to support nature play in an urban setting. During brainstorming sessions\, participants will use a risk management protocol to think about the barriers that they have to access nature and what would it take to mitigate risk. Participants will also reimagine their playground and what could be done to allow more natural material for the children to use in their play and the importance of green spaces. \nThe Nature & Inquiry Community of Practice will meet monthly on the third Thursday from 12:30-2:30 pm EST through June 2022. The cost is free. Each COP is approved for 2 hours of ECE-TRIS credit.  \nFor more information on our Communities of Practice\, go to www.4cforkids.org/training/communities-of-practice. \nFor a downloadable flyer\, click here. \nCOPs in 2022 are being planned as virtual events with the potential for in person opportunities in the future.  \nThank you to our sponsors at the Lift a Life Foundation and Metro United Way for making this a free opportunity for our early childhood community. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the session. SUMMARY:An Emergent Curriculum for Emerging Learners
DESCRIPTION:Are you fascinated by children’s thinking? Do you want to become more equitable in your practice? If you answered yes to one of the questions then this training is just for you! This session will encourage teachers to explore more of the ideas that are provoked by children. When children learn what they want to learn about\, they find their love for learning. This training will explore many different ways that educators can achieve a curriculum that supports all emerging learners in the class. Reflection will also be used to facilitate discussion and to get educators thinking of how to use children’s interest as a part of the curriculum while offering equitable practices. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. This training will be conducted via Zoom\, and you will be required to participate via video and audio through a computer\, phone\, or tablet. SUMMARY:School Readiness Series - Social and Emotional Development - The Nature Way!
DESCRIPTION:Have you noticed how eager children are to go outside? Children naturally want to be outside. So\, why not encourage more play outside when there are so many benefits beyond the frivolous thoughts of outdoor play? This training will focus on understanding the importance of how nature allows children experiences that support their social and emotional development. In addition\, educators will gain a better understanding on how to see children use nature as an important factor for self regulation through small group and large group play. \nThis workshop is free thanks to the generous sponsorship by the Jefferson County Community Early Childhood Council through a grant from the Governor’s Office of Early Childhood. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. SUMMARY:Supporting STARS Series: Observing and assessing! Mastering the process of child assessment using a Creative Curriculum Framework
DESCRIPTION:All child assessment starts with understanding how children learn and develop. Participants will be introduced to the principles of child growth and development and will work to apply the assessment cycle throughout the session. Learn the four step assessment cycle; step one\, observe children often\, and in appropriate context\, step two\, analyze the observations\, and make choices for how to respond\, step three\, evaluate the observation using child growth and development principles\, step four\, summarize\, plan and communicate. After attending the session\, the educators will be able to observe\, analyze\, and evaluate using a developmental appropriate framework which will allow the educator to plan for the individual needs of the child. These essential skills will allow educators to assess children. This session is appropriate for toddler and preschool educators who use a child-assessment tool. All participants will be asked to observe their children in advance of the session\, and bring their detailed observations to the session for a reflective exercise. The participants will also be expected to read a short piece of text prior to the session titled: Learn to See Childhood as a Time to Construct Meaning which emphasizes the significance of observation and learning with children. This training will be conducted via Zoom\, and you will be required to participate via video and audio through a computer\, phone\, or tablet. This class includes a pre-work assignment. You complete the assignment prior to class to receive full credit. All classes are on Eastern Standard Time.  \nLevel 3   CDA 7\, 8  CC 1\, 5   Audience-All \n3 Credit Hours

SUMMARY:Understanding the Role Temperament Plays in Development and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever felt like you were mismatched with a child in your care? Do you ever wonder why some children are so highly active and others are not? Would you like to learn about how to manage these differences? Join us to learn how to support each dimension of temperament – even in mismatched situations. Temperament is not about perfect matches; it is about understanding and nurturing “goodness of fit”. Each participant will be asked to complete a reflection exercise related to a challenging child and their temperament in advance of the session. By the end of the session\, educators will have an understanding of temperament\, the role it plays in learning and development\, as well as practices that can be used daily to foster “goodness of fit”. \nNotice: To receive full credit for this class\, a pre-work assignment must be completed. It will be emailed prior to the class. This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. This training will be conducted via Zoom\, and you will be required to participate via video and audio through a computer\, phone\, or tablet. \nLevel 3  CDA 3 CC 1   Audience-All \n2 Credit Hours

SUMMARY:Supporting STARS Series: Incorporating Benchmarks and Standards into Curriculum
DESCRIPTION:This training will enable early care and education professionals to become more knowledgeable in providing the experiences to help children reach their full potential. Kentucky envisions learning as a continuum\, beginning at birth and continuing throughout life. One way that Kentucky has done this is by developing a shared set of expectations for young children\, drawn from current research\, to provide the foundation for competencies critical to ensuring later academic success known as benchmarks and standards. This session will go in depth about how to use benchmarks and standards into the lesson plan. Understanding benchmarks and standards will support ECE professionals when thinking about offering play experiences for children. SUMMARY:Who has the Power?
DESCRIPTION:Have you wondered if you have the power or if the child has the power? Have you ever seen toddlers become clingy and want their independence at the same time? Have you seen preschoolers insert their power in social situations but still seek an adult for comfort? These behaviors can be challenging and hard to navigate at times. This training will discuss how children are discovering the power they have and how difficult that can be for them with their peers and for the teacher. Participants will focus on learning the development behind the behaviors and how to scaffold their learning for optimal development. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. SUMMARY:Strengthening Families: Nurture and Attachment
DESCRIPTION:This training will provide ECE educators with knowledge about the importance of nurture and attachment from the Kentucky Strengthening Families model. Research shows that babies who receive affection and nurturing from their parents have the best chance of developing into children\, teens and adults who are happy\, healthy and possess individual-level protective factors\, such as relational\, self-regulation and problem solving skills. When the parent-child relationship is strong\, a family will thrive under any condition and  abuse would be less likely to occur. As ECE providers are in contact with parents on a regular basis\, it is important to recognize\, model and support positive interactions for optimal outcomes for the families that are in our community. \nThis workshop is free thanks to the generous sponsorship by the Kosair Charities Face It Movement. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. SUMMARY:Why is Center Time so Important?
DESCRIPTION:Center time is such a vital part of the day where children are concerned – how they are set up\, the amount of time spent in them\, and the number of children allowed inside them. Something to think about: Do you have time limits\, or limits to the number of children you allow in the centers? How do you end a child’s play in a center when it’s time to transition to a new activity? Do you use bells or timers? Do you have them leave for another center before they are finished? Or do you allow them the time they need to complete what they are working on. This is such a big part of a child’s work and needs to be given full attention too. It also frees you up to do those most important observations that you need to make time to do. Please bring your favorite table activity to the table as there will be time to play. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. This training will be conducted via Zoom\, and you will be required to participate via video and audio through a computer\, phone\, or tablet. \nLevel 1   CDA 1\, 3  CC 1\, 4   Audience-All \n2 Credit Hours

SUMMARY:Reflecting on Anti-Bias Education in Action: The Early Years
DESCRIPTION:4-C is excited to share a powerful and deeply profound film about anti-bias education in early childhood. The 48 minute film\, Reflecting on Anti-Bias Education in Action: the Early Years\, is inspired by the work of educators implementing anti-bias education for young children seeking a more just world. View the film on your own time and then join us for a debrief of our collective learning with featured speakers and the film’s director. Please join us\, along with Nadia Jaboneta\, Brian Silveira\, and John Nimmo\, for a reflective dialogue and deep dive into the work of the featured educators. \nAnti-bias education places diversity and equity goals at the heart of everything we do in early childhood. This film recognizes that very young children are observing\, experiencing\, and actively making sense of social identities and biases. Children have a deep and empathetic sense of fairness. Let’s discover what we can do to strengthen the voice of children and create a more just world. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. SUMMARY:Ready\, Set\, Play!
DESCRIPTION:Are you looking for ways to support children’s diverse play? Understanding that children’s play is serious work and provides a foundation and how positive play experiences will create connections in life. Children often play in a way that can be wild and crazy\, but understanding the reasons behind play will make you consider play as a fundamental foundation for learning. This training session will encourage teachers to rethink of how they allow children to play or not to play with their peers. We will discuss the benefits of how big body play\, risky play and rough and tumble contribute to healthy development for children. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. SUMMARY:Strengthening Families: Social and Emotional Competence of Children
DESCRIPTION:Social and Emotional Competence of Children will help you understand how to support children in learning how to positively interact with others\, self-regulating their behaviors\, and effectively communicating their feelings – all of which have positive impacts on their relationships with family members\, other adults\, and peers. Challenging behaviors or delayed development can create extra stress for families\, so early identification and support for both parents and the child are critical to keep children on track. It’s never easy to start these conversations\, and it can be hard to find the right resources. Join 4-C to discover some talking points\, local resources\, and more! By the end of the session\, you will feel more confident in understanding social-emotional development\, and in your ability to refer families to needed resources as challenges arise. \nThis workshop is free thanks to the generous sponsorship by the Kosair Charities Face It Movement. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training. DESCRIPTION:Adventures in Risky Play: What is Your Yes?\nGo to the heart of risk-taking and children. As parents and educators working with young children\, we all have boundaries and feelings around what risky play should be allowed. Examine the cage of boundaries that we have created for ourselves and our children. Challenge each other to rattle our cage and discover where the lines are movable. SUMMARY:Strengthening Families Series - Parental Resilience
DESCRIPTION:Parental Resilience is the belief that families have the courage to get through stressful times and navigate a crisis. Our parental resilience has been tested and pushed to its limit over the past year. From NTI to working from home\, our families have been demonstrating a tireless commitment to their children and the workforce. Let’s discuss what each of us can do to support families and recognize this courage. 4-C hopes this session will examine your understanding of resilience\, which is not an innate gift that one receives at birth but instead is a skill we can all develop with intentionality. By the end of the session you will be able to define resilience and will be able to apply concrete skills that support the development of resilience. \nThis workshop is free thanks to the generous sponsorship by the Kosair Charities Face It Movement. \nNotice: This is an online class.  Please make sure you include a valid email address when registering and that you have internet and email access at the time of the training.
