For nearly 60 years, Community Coordinated Child Care (4-C) has worked to strengthen early care and education by equipping early childhood professionals with the knowledge, resources, and support they need to help children thrive.
Over the past decade, that commitment has grown to include a simple but powerful belief: children need nature.
When children have opportunities to explore, dig, climb, create, observe, and wonder in natural environments, they are doing more than playing. They are developing curiosity, creativity, problem-solving skills, physical confidence, resilience, and meaningful connections with the world around them.
That’s why 4-C is helping child care programs bring more nature into children’s everyday experiences, one play space at a time.
Transforming Play Spaces. Creating Possibilities.
Creating a nature-rich environment doesn’t require a brand-new playground. Sometimes, it starts with something as simple as adding logs for balancing, native plants to explore, loose natural materials for building, or spaces where children can observe insects, birds, and changing seasons.
4-C works alongside early childhood programs to make those possibilities a reality.
Our approach combines research-based professional development for educators, individualized consultation, and ongoing guidance to help programs design outdoor environments that reflect their unique children, communities, cultures, and needs. We help educators see the possibilities within the spaces they already have and create outdoor environments that invite children to learn through hands-on discovery.
To date, 4-C has partnered with more than 20 child care programs and community centers to expand nature play. Together, we have added natural playground elements and transformed traditional outdoor spaces into engaging environments where children can move, explore, imagine, and learn.
The impact reaches far beyond the playground.
Educators tell us they see children becoming more creative and confident problem-solvers. They see stronger physical development, deeper social-emotional connections, and children who are eager to explore and engage with their surroundings. Most importantly, they see the joy that comes when children are given the freedom to discover the world at their own pace.
Every Child Deserves the Chance to Experience Nature
Access to nature-rich play should not depend on where a child lives or attends child care. Yet many early childhood programs face financial and physical barriers to creating these environments.
4-C is working to change that.
With continued community support, we can help more child care programs incorporate natural elements and meaningful outdoor experiences into their daily routines, creating spaces where children can play freely, learn naturally, build confidence, and develop a lifelong connection to the world around them.
Because sometimes, the most powerful learning happens when a child is simply given the opportunity to get outside, get curious, and explore.
