There’s More Than One Way to Say It: An Introduction to Assistive and Augmentative Communication (AAC)

This three-hour introductory training explores the foundations of Assistive and Augmentative Communication (AAC) and its role in supporting children with disabilities and diverse communication needs. Participants will learn about different types of AAC, how AAC can be incorporated into everyday routines and play, and how educators can create communication-rich environments where every child has meaningful opportunities to participate.
Through examples, discussion, and hands-on activities, participants will examine common misconceptions about AAC and learn practical strategies for modeling and supporting its use. The training emphasizes that AAC is not a replacement for speech, but rather a tool that can support communication, language development, social interaction, and participation.
