This study of Johnathan Haidt’s book, “The Anxious Generation”, explores how play-based childhood began to decline in the 1980’s and has been replaced by a “phone-based” childhood which is dominated by screen time. He makes the argument based on research that this shift has caused damages to mental health in teens causing anxiety and depression. Social media addiction causes us to retreat into a virtual world instead of a real world of social activities, friendships, and engagement with others. As early childhood educators, we play an important role in providing children with the opportunity to explore the world around them by engaging together in intentionally designed environments and through natural play. Through reading this book and completing this study, educators will understand the research behind the decline in mental health and learn strategies to restore a more socially interactive and play-based childhood for children.
